5 Ways Ho'oponopono Can Help You Release Negative Emotions and Cultivate Inner Peace

Updated: Jun 28

Ho'oponopono is a Hawaiian practice of reconciliation and forgiveness that aims to restore harmony and balance within oneself, with others, and with the divine. It is based on the belief that every problem or challenge we encounter in life is a manifestation of the memories and traumas stored in our subconscious mind, which affect our behavior and relationships.

Modern Ho'oponopono is credited to Dr. Ihaleakala Hew Len and involves four key phrases that are repeated as a mantra (in any order):

I'm sorry | Please forgive me | Thank you | I love you

These phrases are directed both inwardly and outwardly, towards yourself and the divine.

By acknowledging and taking responsibility for the memories and traumas within yourself, and expressing gratitude and love towards yourself and others, you can release negative emotions and heal relationships.

When you the phrases of the mantra - you are not asking a another person to forgive you, you are talking to 'source energy' 'the divine' 'the oneness'. Being human means you will make mistakes during your life. Mistakes are life's best teachers through feedback and an opportunity to grow into a best version of yourself.

Ho'oponopono is a traditional Hawaiian practice with its own unique cultural context and beliefs that can be used as a form of forgiveness work. It involves taking responsibility for your own thoughts and actions, seeking forgiveness for any harm caused, and releasing negative emotions such as guilt, resentment, and anger. Ho'oponopono also emphasizes the importance of practicing gratitude and letting go of attachments, which are also key components of forgiveness work.

In the advanced teaching of Ho'oponopono Dr Hew Len shares a fifth phrase (that not many people know about). It is 'I forgive myself'. I believe this is the most powerful phrase of them all, because we so rarely take the time to forgive ourselves, and that is the key to deep happiness. It is a pathway to unconditional love for yourself.

"Ho'oponopono is a process of letting go of toxic emotions, negative thoughts, and limiting beliefs so we can experience more peace, love, and joy in our lives." - Dr. Hew Len.

5 Ways to Release Negative Emotions and Cultivate Inner Peace:

1. Take responsibility for your own thoughts and actions: Ho'oponopono emphasizes the idea that we are all connected, and our thoughts and actions can affect others. By taking responsibility for your own thoughts and actions, you can release negative emotions such as guilt, shame, and resentment.

2. Seeking forgiveness: Ho'oponopono emphasizes the importance of seeking forgiveness from others for any harm caused, even unintentionally. Acknowledging and apologizing for your mistakes releases negative emotions.

3. Let go of attachments: Ho'oponopono encourages you to let go of attachments to people, things, and outcomes. By releasing your attachments, you can free yourself from negative emotions such as fear, anxiety, and frustration.

4. Practice gratitude: Ho'oponopono emphasizes the importance of practicing gratitude for what you have, rather than focusing on what you lack. Cultivating a sense of gratitude shifts your focus from negative emotions to positive ones.

5. Cleaning memories: Ho'oponopono encourages you to "clean" your memories and beliefs by acknowledging and releasing negative thoughts and emotions. Cleaning your memories, frees you from negative emotions and cultivates inner peace.
