What is a Healing Crisis?

Updated: Jun 28

A healing crisis is when your symptoms worsen after a healing session. If it's going to happen it will likely be the day after the session. It may pass within a few hours, or could possibly take a day or two for you to feel better. Then you will likely feel the benefits of the healing. An energy healing session works on clearing energy blocks in your system, when those blocks are removed the body may take a little time to adjust to the new normal. In my experience healing crisis' don't happen a lot, but it pays to be aware that it can for some people.

What is a Healing Crisis?

We're all different, and so we respond differently to foods, supplements, medications, the effects of exercise, and so much more. This also translates to the healing of our bodies. What helps one person to heal may not help another, and in some instances, it may help a little too much. Just as healing can provide relief from physical and emotional illness and stress, it can also 'sometimes' lead to some form of healing crisis in the body.

"Rather than dreading this kind of development [a healing crisis] as something bad, I hold a space that appreciates the opportunity that sometimes arises for people to have a more profound healing than they bargained for." Donna Eden

Symptoms of a Healing Crisis

It may include some, or all of the following:

Physical Symptoms:

  • Headaches or migraines

  • Fatigue or exhaustion

  • Flu-like symptoms, such as body aches and fever

  • Runny nose, chills, sweating - cold or flu like symptoms

  • Unexplained increased emotions

  • Nausea, diarrhoea

  • Skin reactions, such as rashes or acne

Emotional Symptoms:

  • Mood swings or increased irritability

  • Feelings of sadness, anxiety, or anger

  • Crying or emotional outbursts

Mental Symptoms:

  • Lack of clarity or some confusion

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Distrubed sleep or vivid dreams

Toxins

A healing crisis can occur for a number of reasons – it's usually from an overload of toxins that stress your body. If your body is carrying a high level of toxins, the healing can trigger a healing crisis. Just like fasting for a few days can bring on a detox reaction.

Sensitivity and Energy Shifts

The movement and clearing of blocked energy can temporarily disrupt the body's equilibrium as it adjusts to a higher state of balance in the body.

You may be highly sensitive to energy and energy healing. You may be a highly sensitive person (HSP). If you are aware that you are, it is wise to advise the healer before your healing session.

I work with clients who are sensitive to energy. By intentionally reducing the amount of energy output, and the speed of the energising phase of the session, this provides a gentler healing outcome, and reduces the chances of them having a healing crisis.

Emotional Release

Emotional traumas or suppressed feelings may surface during the healing process, leading to temporary emotional discomfort.

Sometimes things have to get worse before they get better!

Plan Ahead

Avoid having an energy healing session just before something important in your life; such as, important work, family, or social commitments. Leave at least a one week break between your healing session and your big event, especially if you are trying out a new modality, or healer for the first time.

A Healing Crisis May Occur if:

  • You are run down, or dealing with a lot of stress.

  • You are releasing old dirty diseased energies and toxins stored in the body.

  • You are releasing old (limiting) beliefs, trapped emotions, or negative thought forms.

Barbara Brennan energy healer and author of 'The Hands of Light says: “Sometimes people get sick after deep work. Because strong energy flow releases toxins held in the tissues.” she calls a healing crisis the 'fluky flu.”

Always rest after the healing session, rather than get crazy busy, even if you are feeling amazing!

Easing the Effects of a Healing Crisis

If you feel unwell after a healing session, try any, or all of the following to see what works best for you:

  1. Avoid alcohol and intense exercise for a few days after the healing session.

  2. Drink plenty of water, stay hydrated, just as you do if you have a cold or flu. This helps to speed up the elimination of toxins from the body.

  3. Rest. I warn my healing clients to take it easy for a few days after healing. Healing usually continues for several days after the session. Too often I've found people feel great after their initial healing session and make the mistake of going out and doing two to three times the amount of work they would do on a normal day. Then to their surprise their bodies crash the next day from too much exertion.

  4. If you are doing self-healing, cleanse and clear your auric fields, chakras, and meridians, in particular the triple warmer and spleen meridians. Look for (and repair) any energy leaks in the auric feilds and chakras.

  5. If you were working with a healer, contact them. A little extra clearing may be just what you need.

Healing your body and mind needs to be easy... and it totally can be.
