Which Type of Healer Are You?

Updated: Aug 7

There are many different types of energy healers and healing modalities. As healers our journey includes discovering the type of healing we are most suited to, devleoping our gifts and any modalities we most love to work with. Our unique healing strengths and gifts may have lain dormant for most of our lives. But don't let that stop you from believing you are capable of learning how to heal yourself.

Many healers begin by learning a modality (a healing system) such as Reiki, Pranic, Healing Touch, Qigong, etc. If you are a systemised healer (drawn to healing with a modality) you may choose to specialise in one modality, or learn multiple modalities until you find the one that speaks to you. Or, over time you may integrate a range of healing skills and techniques and create your own modality. Some healers are divinely guided to create a new unique modality. Your healing journey can be unique. Trust your intuition to guide you on this exciting journey that's full of learning and growth. You can meet many wonderful people on this path and bring much needed light and love to the world.

As a new healer you may like to start by learning a modality, or you may consider the healer types and how you respond to these types for healing yourself, then explore modalities inline with them. There is no right, or wrong way to tap into your healing abilities and become a healer. Your healing abilities may be made up of a number of the key energy healer types. Which of the energy healter types resonate most with you? You will have a little of all of them, and most likely have a primary and one or two that stand out for you.

The 6 Key Energy Healer Types

Include: Frequency Healers, Intuitive Healers, Systemized Healers, Shamanic Healers, Light Healers, and Sound healers. Your own healing abilities may include one or many of these.

Sound Healers

  • Sound healers use sound vibrations from instruments like singing bowls, gongs, tuning forks, or the human voice to promote healing and well-being.

  • Music heals you and you understand that sound frequencies can affect the physical body, emotions, and energy field.

  • You may hear words and concepts, receive inner promptings and gain greater understanding when you talk thing through.

  • You learn well by listening, value talk therapy and are likely clairaudient.

How It Works:
  • The healer produces sounds at specific frequencies and rhythms that resonate with the body’s energy centers and tissues.

  • These vibrations can help release energetic blockages, reduce stress, and promote a state of deep relaxation and healing.

Frequency Healers

  • Frequency healers use specific sound frequencies or vibrations to bring the body, mind, and spirit into a state of harmony and balance.

  • They can sense lightness and heaviness and tune into higher and lower vibrations.

  • They may use tools such as tuning forks, frequency-generating devices, or music tuned to certain frequencies.

  • The principle behind frequency healing is that different frequencies can affect the physical, emotional, and spiritual states, promoting healing and well-being.

How It Works:
  • The healer identifies areas of imbalance in the body’s energy field and applies specific frequencies to those areas.

  • The sound waves interact with the body's cells, energy centers (chakras), or meridians to restore balance and promote healing.

Intuitive Healers

  • Intuitive healers use their heightened sense of intuition to identify and address energetic imbalances, emotional blockages, or physical issues in a person.

  • They often receive information through clairvoyance (seeing), clairaudience (hearing), clairsentience (feeling), or claircognizance (knowing).

  • They have nudges and take action based on these energetic messages.

  • Some intuitive healers know things before they happen or have premonitions.

  • They pick up on the energies of others and may be drawn to touch healing, mediumship or psychic roles.

How It Works:
  • The healer tunes into the client’s energy field and receives intuitive insights about areas that need healing.

  • They may use various techniques such as energy clearing, chakra balancing, or providing guidance based on their intuitive insights.

Systemised Healers

  • Systemised healers follow structured, established methods and protocols for energy healing. This could include practices like Reiki, Healing Touch, Pranic Healing, Shamanism, Family Constellations.

  • They typically adhere to a set of guidelines and techniques taught in formal training programs.

  • Tend to be strategic in their approach to healing work, and understand best when they have the big picture of how a modality works.

  • Systemised healers like to know the the research and science of healing.

How It Works:
  • The healer uses specific hand positions, symbols, or techniques as outlined in their training to channel healing energy to the client.

  • The process is systematic and repeatable, ensuring consistency in the healing practice.

Light Healers

  • Light healers use visualization, light energy, or physical light sources to heal and balance the energy field.

  • You may see auras, sacred geometry and healing symbols.

  • You might work with light rays, colors, or visualize bringing healing light into the body.

How It Works:
  • You focus on directing light energy to specific areas of the body or the entire energy field to clear blockages and restore harmony.

  • This can be done through hands-on techniques, visualization, or tools like coloured lights or lasers, or art therapy.

Touch Healers

  • Touch healers use physical touch to influence and balance the body's energy systems, promote relaxation, reduce stress, and facilitate healing.

  • They believe that through touch, they can manipulate the energy flow in the body, release blockages, and enhance overall well-being.

  • This could include systemised practices like: Reiki, Healing Touch, Therapeutic Touch, Craniosacral Therapy, Reflexology, Acupressure, Shiatsu, Manual Lymphatic Drainage, Rolfing Structural Integration.

How It Works:
  • The healer uses their hands to touch or hover over specific areas of the client's body.

  • They may employ various techniques such as gentle pressure, tapping, or sweeping movements to detect and correct energy imbalances.

  • The touch can be direct on the skin or through clothing, depending on the modality and the client's comfort level.

Each type of healer uses methods and philosophies to promote health and balance, addressing the physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of well-being.

This blog post was inspired by the work of Jennifer McLean who teaches healers how to activate their own modality of healing.
